While poverty in first world countries is rampant, many people do not understand the reality of life for less privileged people in other countries.

Honduras is one of those countries. The Municipal garbage dump of San Pedro Sula is the home to many and the livelihood to many more.

Men, women and children of all ages comb through piles of smoldering garbage, looking for materials and items they can salvage and resell or recycle. It is a quagmire of household, industrial and medical waste. The smoke bellowing from beneath their feet rob their lungs of fresh air. A lucky few wear worn shoes but many wear sandals or are barefoot.

I spent two days documenting the activities at a dump. Breathing in the smoke and smell of rotting garbage forced me many times to step away in an effort to simply breathe. I can only imagine the long term effects on those who live and work there everyday.

What sort of future does it hold for the children?
